Biking in Tuscany and the Maremma
A great way to visit Tuscany is from the seat of a bicycle. Whether you bring your bikes with you, or rent them here, the Upper Maremma offers numerous trails along which you can explore the landscape and the history of the region.
The village of Civitella Marittima is surrounded by woods that are crisscrossed by miles of unpaved roads where it is possible to ride in safety without the risks of traffic.
A number of interesting trails can be found in the Upper Maremma. The Comune of Civitella Paganico has published a map of various itineraries in the hope of promoting “eco-tourism”, and, in particular, cycling and equestrian. There are nine different itineraries that cover the entire territory of the Comune, open to cyclists, horseback riders and hikers. The trails vary in length and difficulty and are therefore suitable for all types, from beginners to experts. The trail map is available to our guests.
These trails allow the visitor to experience all of the most interesting places this area has to offer, in terms of both nature and history: the castles at Monte Antico and Casenovole, the fortified town of Paganico, the Abbey of the Ardengheschi Counts, the Petriolo thermal baths and the medieval village of Pari.
Visitors with access to a car + bike can explore numerous other areas, all within easy reach of Civitella. These include the Tyrrhenian coast, the Elsa and Orcia valleys, Monte Amiata, the Argentario peninsula and the ancient Etruscan lands.

Guests of Casina di Rosa can take advantage of the expertise of local bike tour company “Maremma in Bici“, based in nearby Roccastrada. They offer bike rental services and guided tours for groups or personalized itineraries according to your specific interests and abilities.
The itineraries created by Maremma in Bici include tours of the castles with possible visits to local oil and wine producers, a visit to the Abbey of San Galgano, a tour through the woods following the course of a river, a tour of the coast, or a tour of the ancient trade routes which today remain as unpaved roads through the woods.
Biking through the Maremma is an ideal way to discover the ancient roads, the old churches and farmhouses and to enjoy the open air and the beauty of the Tuscan countryside.
